All Linda wants to do is sleep. She won’t look at her husband. She can’t stand her daughter. And she doesn’t want to have this baby. Having this baby means moving on, and she just wants to go back to before. Before their family was torn apart, before the blame was placed.

This is a difficult review for me to write for many reasons. Missing Pieces by Laura Pearson was a personal challenge for me as a reader. The book starts with Linda at the funeral parlour on the day of her little one’s funeral. I have never read such an exquisitely written first chapter albeit it painfully heartbreaking. Ms Pearson has a knack for consuming your every sense and you feel yourself holding your breath.
My normal reading style for a book is to hopefully fully submerge myself into the plot. Haunt the main characters and go on the adventure with them. Cry when they cry, laugh when they laugh and so forth. But with Missing Pieces, I couldn’t. It was a little close to home and I fought with the ‘do I continue or not?’ scenario. I did, but I could only do it by removing all emotion from it. I disconnected from it, I appreciated the beauty of the writing and the plot development.
The theme throughout Missing Pieces is sadness and it never lifts. Although detached as I read I still felt bogged down by the weight of the unending grief, weeping through the paper.
I know we will hear a lot more about Laura Pearson in the future, she has a very creative and unique style of writing.
Before opening the first page of Missing Pieces, take a deep breath and settle your thoughts because you will never forget the journey you are about to take.
My rating for the book would be four stars.
