Favourite Five with Carol Cooper 

• What’s your favourite book cover by another author and why?

I love the cover of Tony Parsons’s novel Man and Boy, with its simple photo of two pairs of shoes. There’s so much sentiment in the man’s shoes next to the boy’s, and there’s humour too.

• What is your favourite time to read?

My favourite time is after lunch, or in the morning before getting out of bed. Unfortunately, these are also times when I should be working, so it doesn’t often pan out for me.

• Do you have a favourite snack to nibble whilst reading?

No. I try not to eat and read at the same time, but, if you were to force me to have something, it would be marinated olives. Since my cat loves them too, I can’t leave them out or she would lick them all.

• Who is your favourite book character that has stayed with you long after the book ended?

Anita Hall in An Unknown Woman by Jane Davis. She’s 46 and loses everything she owns in a house fire, forcing herself to re-evaluate who she is and everything she has done in her life, as well as her relationships. It’s easy to see why the book has won awards.

• What is your favourite book quote?

“If you can keep your head when all about are losing theirs, it’s just possible that you haven’t grasped the situation.” It’s from Jean Kerr’s hilarious book Please Don’t Eat the Daisies, published in 1957 and still as true today. She was a playwright trying to work at home, while raising four boys. As a writer and mother of three sons, I get a lot of what she said.
