Carpet Diem paperback cover

Book Synopsis

Fifteen years after losing most of his family to a devastating, pudding-related tragedy, Simon Debovar has settled into a life of self-imposed exile from the stinking, selfish morass of humanity. Content that his daily highlights will include hazelnut coffee, a long bath and the occasional jar of olives, his life is completely upturned by the discovery that his ornate living room carpet is the deciding factor in a bet between God and Satan.

When mysteriously well-timed carpet thieves deprive him of the crucial heirloom, Simon is forced to leave his hermit’s existence behind for a world of angels, demons, witches and immortals.

And then it gets complicated.

Favourite Five with Justin Lee Anderson

Justin Lee Anderson

Born in Edinburgh, Justin spent a decade of his childhood bouncing around the US, following his dad’s professional football (soccer) career. He returned to the Scottish capital in his teens and, after a few brief sojourns to Dundee (for an English degree) and the South of France (for his family), settled back in the city that’s always been ‘home’.

In over 15 years of writing and editing for a living, he’s done everything from restaurant, theatre and comedy reviews to training manuals and magazines, including four years as the writer, editor and photographer for an Edinburgh guidebook. Currently working as a Content Editor, he lives with his Brady Bunch family in a permanent state of happy chaos.

He has the same initials as the Justice League of America, and his favourite writers are Neil Gaiman, Aaron Sorkin, Joe Abercrombie and Joss Whedon, in no particular order.

He misses Firefly.

  • What’s your favourite book cover by another author and why?
I had to think about this a lot, because my gut reaction was The Night Circus, by Erin Morgenstern, because it just has such a beautiful, magical, Gothic, Victorian feel to it. But I assumed I must be forgetting another, more classic book. After pondering it for several days, though, I can’t think of a single cover that jumps out at me more, so I’m sticking with this one.

  • What is your favourite time to read?
Without question, bedtime. I’m definitely a read myself to sleep kind of guy. I fell out of the habit for a long time (thanks, iPhone!) but I’m consciously choosing to put the phone down and pick up books again these days.
  •  Do you have a favourite snack to nibble whilst reading?
I’m a total crisp junkie. Oh and beer nuts – especially BBQ-flavoured ones. I can literally just munch my way through bags of those bad boys.
  • Who is your favourite book character that has stayed with you long after the book ended?
Probably Heathcliff, from Wuthering Heights. He is so complex, passionate and deeply pissed off at the world for his lot. He’s extremely relatable and yet does some utterly awful things. I think people can see their own darkness and light reflected in him.
  • What is your favourite book quote?
That’s easy. The second line from Clockwork Orange:
“There was me, that is Alex, and my three droogs, that is Pete, Georgie, and Dim, Dim being really dim, and we sat in the Korova Milkbar making up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening, a flip dark chill winter bastard though dry.”
There is so much brilliant about this line. It establishes the odd grammar and syntax of the book, while also allowing you to quickly work out from context what the new words mean. But I think my favourite part is actually the end – “a flip dark chill winter bastard though dry.” It’s such an evocative way of pretty much just describing the weather, but it also reveals something about the brutality and yet mundanity of the character, too. Just fantastic writing.
