When Wendy Swift receives a letter demanding nearly two million dollars in restitution from her attorney husband, her world begins to unravel. The suburban life she believed in, as a stay-at-home mother with a loving husband and three daughters, is suddenly exposed as an illusion.

A Dream Life follows Swift’s search for validation through marriage, motherhood, and social status, and the painful unravelling that follows.

After her husband’s incarceration in the 1990s, Swift is left to support her three young daughters alone, guiding them through loss, shame, and uncertainty. Her journey is far from easy, marked by setbacks as well as strength, reflection, and growth, while also revealing the dangers of blind materialism.

This powerful memoir sheds light on the complex realities families face when confronted with addiction, mental illness, and incarceration. Swift combines unflinching honesty with moments of wry self-awareness, offering a compelling exploration of denial, resilience, and ultimately, self-discovery.

A Dream Life is a reminder that anyone can fall into false beliefs, but when the truth is faced, however painful, it can lead to renewal, strength, and a reclaimed sense of self.
