Today J.A. Warnock reviews Air Guitar and Caviar by Jackie Ladbury. A contemporary romance that was published by Fabrian Books in 2017.

💫 Back of the book

Best-selling author Chrissie Manby says, “I love Jackie Ladbury’s warm, engaging and amusing characters so Air Guitar and Caviar promises to be a real treat.” Five star Amazon review says of Air Guitar and Caviar, ‘Air Guitar and Caviar is a lovely romance, with well-drawn, fully-rounded characters, some rather passionate love scenes, and a lot of humour. I absolutely defy anyone not to fall in love with Dylan within the first page. He is a gorgeous hero in every sense of the word, and his laid-back, open, totally honest personality makes him the ideal partner for the wounded, scared, somewhat withdrawn Scarlett. Busker Dylan spends his days pulling pints in the local pub and singing on the high street, waiting for fame to call. That suits him fine, until beautiful, but frosty, air stewardess, Scarlett, tosses some coins into his hat but ignores his killer smile and his offer of pizza. He sets out to get the girl, but Scarlett isn’t in the right frame of mind to date anyone, let alone a penniless, if charming, busker boy. Dylan’s desperate for his big break, but will it bring him the happiness he longs for? And with Scarlett’s past threatening to ruin her future, will Dylan be left to make sweet music all on his own?

Jackie Ladbury writes heart-warming contemporary and historical women’s fiction that is always guaranteed a happy ever after. From spending many years as an air-stewardess and seeing that it really is love that makes the world go around, she determined to put the same sparkle and emotion into her stories. Her life is no longer as exotic (or chaotic) as it was in those heady days of flying as she now lives a quiet life in Hertfordshire with her family and two cats, spending her days making up stories and finding excuses not to go to the gym.

Air Guitar and Caviar by Jackie Ladbury

Despite reading Jackie Ladbury’s ‘Air Guitar and Caviar’ over the summer, it has taken me quite some time to write the review. I should start with an apology for that but the honest answer is I was not then, nor am I now, entirely sure how to do it justice. As anyone who knows me will attest, I do logic. I am not emotional, I do not cry at movies, ooh at babies, aww at puppies and I certainly do not read romantic fiction. If you are wondering why Love Books Group asked me to review a novel shortlisted in the 2016 Search for a Star Romantic Novel competition, believe me, I was right there with you.

Reading Jackie Ladbury’s book helped me realise I have two main problems with romantic novels. One is the mushy stuff and I was delighted to see that she managed to avoid anything too painfully sentimental. Yes, it is a book about love, about falling for the wrong person at the wrong time and dealing with the full suite of misunderstandings and misconceptions but it is nicely done. The story is pacey enough not to mope or dwell on events and the characters have enough spirit to carry it off.  My second problem is impatience. Please bear in mind I sat at the movies watching the visually spectacular Titanic thinking “Come on we know it sinks, get on with it”. To my surprise, ‘Air Guitar and Caviar’ actually held my attention. Despite a plethora of untimely twists and wrong turns, I wasn’t bored. The fact that there is enough going on in this book to keep an old cynic like me engaged speaks volumes.

In terms of characters, Dylan is a definite hero. Honest, persistent and pretty dashing he lights up the page. Scarlett, on the other hand, is as reserved as Dylan is open which leads to some of the more frustrating plot points for both reader and character.  There is a humorous thread running through the book which was as enjoyable as it was unexpected and based on writing style alone, I don’t think anyone would guess this is Jackie Ladbury’s first novel. I am quite sure there is more to come from this author and I look forward to it. If you are a fan of romance, this is a five star must read. If you aren’t, read it anyway; it might surprise you.
