Hearts and dreams evolve in the shadow of the once-magnificent Penn Station.

Vera Keller, the daughter of German immigrants in turn-of-the-century New York City, finds her life upended when the man she loves becomes engaged to another woman. But Angelo Bellavia has also inadvertently opened up Vera’s life to unexpected possibilities. Angelo’s new wife, Pearl, the wealthy daughter of a clothing manufacturer, has defied her family’s expectations by devoting herself to the suffrage movement. In Pearl, Vera finds an unexpected dear friend…and a stirring new cause of her own. But when Pearl’s selfless work pulls her farther from Angelo and their son, the life Vera craved is suddenly within her reach—if her conscience will allow her to take it.

Her choice will define not only her future but also that of her daughter, Alice.

Vera and Alice—a generation and a world apart—are bound by the same passionate drive to fulfill their dreams. As first mother and then daughter come of age in a city that is changing as rapidly as its skyline, they’ll each discover that love is the only constant.

You can read the synopsis of The Way of Beauty by Camille Di Maio, but it won’t begin to touch the undercurrent of what the book really holds. This Historical Women’s Fiction novel follows the perfectly intertwined relationships between a number of wonderful characters as their lives ebb and flow with challenges and joy. In every part of the book you want to cheer for them all, even if what they want puts them at odds with each other at times.

I can always tell I really like a book when I need to skip ahead to make sure everything is going to work out. Yes, I confess, I’m that reader. ‘Real’ life is too full of uncertain outcomes that we can’t predict, so when I have the opportunity to know RIGHT NOW what is going to happen to a character I love, I take it! No worries, I always go back and read the parts I missed, more relaxed or prepared for what lays ahead on the character’s journey. In The Way of Beauty I resisted the second time I was tempted to peek ahead. Just saying. The characters hooked me in this much.

Perhaps the most positive comment a reader can ever make is that they didn’t want the novel to end. I didn’t want The Way of Beauty to end. I would have loved for Vera and Alice’s lives to continue to unfold before me even as this part of their stories concluded.

Thank you to Lake Union Publishing and Ms. Di Maio for the opportunity to review the advance copy of this novel.
