About Soul-Happy: A Viking Woman’s Long Road Home
Nette Nilsson has big dreams and is in the midst of pursuing them—starting by leaving Denmark to attend university in Toronto, Canada—when she falls for a beguiling but volatile American. Their romance moves fast, and in what seems like no time she finds herself living a privileged but deeply unhappy life in New York with her now-husband, Cal. After suffering for too long, she finally begins to find her way onto a better path—only to be abruptly faced with a life-threatening physical condition. To survive and to heal, Nette must confront dark family lies and her hidden traumas and find her own power again.
In an era of increasing awareness regarding how many strong, intelligent women ignore their gut and lose themselves—and the lives they dream of having—when they become entangled with toxic men, Soul-Happy illuminates the underlying reasons for one promising young woman’s downhill slide after she falls for “the wrong kind of love,” and follows her harrowing battle to put herself back together again.
A Memoir of Survival, Healing and Finding Yourself Again
What happens when the life you’ve worked towards becomes the very thing you need to escape?
In Soul-Happy: A Viking Woman’s Long Road Home, Anette Nilsson reflects on a journey that begins with ambition and excitement.
Leaving her native Denmark to study at university in Toronto, Nette is determined to pursue her dreams and build a fulfilling future.
But when she falls in love with a charming yet volatile American, her life begins to move in a direction she could never have anticipated.
Their relationship progresses quickly, eventually leading to marriage and a seemingly privileged existence in New York.
Behind the outward appearance of success, however, Nette is deeply unhappy.
As she begins to recognise the damage the relationship has caused and takes steps towards rebuilding her life, she is confronted with another devastating challenge: a life-threatening physical condition.
Her fight for survival becomes intertwined with the need to confront painful family secrets and hidden trauma.
Through her experiences, Nilsson explores how intelligent, ambitious women can become trapped in destructive relationships and how difficult it can be to rediscover their identity afterwards.
Soul-Happy is a memoir about personal strength, the consequences of ignoring your instincts and the long, complicated journey towards healing.
It is also a story about reclaiming your voice, rediscovering your worth and finding the courage to create a different future.
For readers who appreciate honest, emotionally complex memoirs exploring relationships, resilience and personal transformation, Soul-Happy offers a deeply personal perspective.
