About Bachelor Butterflies

Bachelor Butterflies is a short satirical novel about San Finton, a young man who doesn’t like working. He would like to quit his job, but he lives in Murka, where the government decrees that unemployed single males are a problem in society and will be deported to Tract 1, a new area. Tract 1 residents can only return to Murka if they pass The Interview.

The main characters:

San, who hates work. The everydayness/ insideness/ clean clothes/shaven of it.

Vivi, whose lips sat in an innocent smirk.

Pince, someone who seems to regard a successful conversation as a meaningful event.

Bilan, from Ococonea, where there are no rivers or mountains, just the Little Chisels and Baron Beauties.

A Satirical Look at Work, Society and Government Control

What would happen if unemployment wasn’t simply a financial concern but grounds for deportation?

In Bachelor Butterflies, Jeff Probst imagines a society where the government has decided that unemployed single men are a problem that must be removed.

For San Finton, this creates a rather inconvenient situation.

San doesn’t like working. In fact, he’d quite happily give it up.

But in Murka, choosing not to work comes with serious consequences.

Those who fall foul of the government’s rules face deportation to Tract 1, an area from which they can only return by successfully completing The Interview.

Through this unusual premise, Probst invites readers to consider the expectations society places on individuals and the sometimes absurd relationship between personal freedom and institutional authority.

The story introduces a distinctive cast of characters, including Vivi, Pince and Bilan, whose personalities add to the novel’s unconventional world.

Combining literary fiction with satire, Bachelor Butterflies explores ideas about employment, identity, conformity and the pressures of belonging.

For readers who enjoy quirky characters, unusual fictional societies and stories that challenge accepted social norms, this short novel offers an intriguing reading experience.
