On Tour: Lizzie Miller’s War by Elaine Whiteford

Love Books Tours is heading to Stirling in August 1914 for our latest historical fiction tour.

From 9th–15th September, our LBT Crew will be reading and reviewing Lizzie Miller’s War by Scottish author Elaine Whiteford, published by Sterlini Publishing.

A story of love, suspicion, grief and resilience, Lizzie Miller’s War follows a young Scottish woman whose life changes dramatically when Britain declares war on Germany.

About the Book

War changes everything the summer she turns eighteen.

Lizzie Miller is delighted when she is finally invited to step out with Ralf Schmidt, the young German toolmaker she has secretly fallen in love with.

Then Britain declares war on Germany.

Overnight, Ralf is recast as an enemy of the state, leaving Lizzie fighting a very different battle on the home front.

As suspicion, grief and betrayal surround her, Lizzie follows her heart from her home in Stirling to a munitions factory at Gretna, a Quaker house in Glasgow and an internment camp on the Isle of Man.

As the war tightens its grip, Lizzie must decide how far she is prepared to go for the life she wants and the man she loves.

What will she risk, and what will be the cost of standing by those she loves?

Lizzie Miller’s War is a sweeping story exploring the long shadows of war and the resilience of a young woman determined to stand up for what she believes in.

About Elaine Whiteford

Elaine Whiteford is a Scottish historical fiction author with a fascination for women’s social history and a passion for shining a light on its lesser-known stories.

Lizzie Miller’s War is her third historical novel, following The Rescue Sisters and The Asylum Women.

The Rescue Sisters is set in 1900 against the backdrop of child rescue and migration, while The Asylum Women takes readers to a Scottish district lunatic asylum in 1911, where four women are drawn together by a mystery patient and a secret tragedy.

Elaine also writes non-fiction, particularly local history.
