Grounds for applause: best-selling author brews up a storm about Seattle’s forgotten founder

Kate, winner of the Panowski Playwriting Award, blends historical narrative with contemporary reflection and examines how power, gender, and moral judgement have shaped which stories are remembered and which are left behind. Rooted in over a decade of research, Madam(e) Lou reclaims the lost legacy of Lou Graham, a wealthy and controversial figure in turn-of-the-century Seattle – now famous for coffee, grunge, Frasier and reinventing itself as a tech hub.

Kate says: ‘Although the city honours the founding fathers there is no monument to the founding mother who was written out of history due to her involvement in the sex trade. I uncovered a woman who was ahead of her time in supporting racial equality, social justice and female emancipation and who established case law that currently provides one of the few legal defences for US immigrants.’ The show is currently under consideration for development into a major television series, so be one of the first to see how it all began. Madam(e) Lou will appeal to fans of You’re Dead to Me and Horrible Histories.
