What If Society Decided You Were a Problem? Bachelor Butterflies by Jeff Probst @LoveBooksTours #BookstagramTour #BookPromotion #Bookstagrammers #BookReviews

What If Society Decided You Were a Problem?

Some books ask you to suspend disbelief.

Others ask you to examine the world around you a little more closely.

Bachelor Butterflies by Jeff Probst does both.

Sharp, thought-provoking, and laced with satirical humour, this literary novel explores identity, work, belonging, and what happens when society begins deciding who deserves a place within it. Though first written in 1994, its themes feel strikingly relevant today.

Welcome to Murka…

San Finton has a problem.

He doesn’t particularly enjoy working.

He dislikes the routines, expectations, and relentless predictability of employment.

Unfortunately for San, he lives in Murka.

And Murka has a solution.

The government has determined that unemployed single men are a burden on society. Their answer?

Deport them to Tract 1.

Those sent away can only return if they successfully navigate The Interview.

What follows is a satirical journey through a world that feels both absurd and uncomfortably familiar, populated by unforgettable characters and observations that cut straight to the heart of modern life.

Meet the Characters

San Finton

A young man who hates working and struggles to fit neatly into society’s expectations.

Vivi

A woman whose “lips sat in an innocent smirk,” bringing intrigue and complexity to San’s world.

Pince

Someone who treats meaningful conversation as one of life’s greatest achievements.

Bilan

A visitor from Ococonea, a place with “no rivers or mountains, just the Little Chisels and Baron Beauties.”

Together, they inhabit a story that’s quirky, insightful, and impossible to categorise neatly.

A Question Worth Asking

How much of our identity is tied to what we do for a living?

And if society stopped valuing us because of our productivity…

Who would we become?

Bachelor Butterflies doesn’t offer easy answers.

But it certainly asks fascinating questions.

Is This One for You?

If you enjoy literary fiction that challenges assumptions, embraces satire, and explores the quirks and contradictions of human nature, Bachelor Butterflies deserves a place on your reading list.

Because sometimes the most powerful stories aren’t those that tell us what to think.

They’re the ones that encourage us to think differently.

Happy reading!
