59 Minutes by Holly Seddon

I know this book has had a lot of marmite reactions… but for me? It was exceptional.

I absolutely devoured it.

Yes, it’s harrowing. Yes, it’s claustrophobic. And yes, it will make your chest feel tight at points. But it is a work of fiction — and as someone who genuinely loves dystopian fiction, this was a complete treat for me.

The premise alone is genius.

Nuclear missile threat to South England. 59 minutes until impact. Seek immediate shelter. This is not a test.

Tell me that doesn’t grab you instantly.

What makes this so clever is the choice of who we follow. Three very different women. Three very personal battles unfolding in real time. A young mother trying to get back to her child. A pregnant woman whose romantic getaway turns into something unimaginable. And an older woman whose sole focus is protecting her daughter, Bunny.

There’s no over-the-top heroics. No Hollywood gloss. Just raw, frantic, human decision-making under impossible pressure.

The ticking clock structure is brutal in the best way. Every chapter feels urgent. Every choice feels heavy. You can feel the seconds slipping away. I found myself holding my breath more than once.

And underneath the chaos, it’s really about motherhood, love, fear and instinct. What would you do in 59 minutes if the world was about to end?

It’s uncomfortable. It’s intense. But it’s also incredibly smart and emotionally layered.

For readers who enjoy dystopian tension, moral dilemmas and stories that make you sit quietly afterwards thinking, what would I have done? — this is absolutely worth your time.

It worked completely for me.
