Review: The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary

Some books just make you feel at home, and The Flatshare was one of them for me. It’s funny, tender, and so full of heart that by the end I was in tears—in the best possible way.

The premise is quirky but utterly charming. Tiffy needs a cheap flat after walking away from a toxic relationship, and Leon needs extra cash. So they agree to a flat-share … and a bed share. They live in the same one-bedroom flat in London, but at different times. He works nights; she works days. They’ve never met, but they begin to leave little notes for each other. What starts as practical scribbles on post-its slowly blossoms into friendship, trust, and something more.

I adored the way Beth O’Leary captured two people learning to see each other through words before anything else. There’s such a sweetness in their growing connection, but also a raw honesty in how both characters are carrying baggage from their pasts. Tiffy is bright and funny but still scarred from her controlling ex. Leon is quiet, thoughtful, and completely devoted to his brother, which adds another layer of emotional depth to his story.

The flat itself becomes a kind of character—it’s the container for their missed moments, their scribbled conversations, their gradually intertwining lives. I loved how the humour and warmth balanced against the heavier themes of trauma and justice. It made the story not just a romance, but a journey of healing and finding safe spaces, both in places and in people.

By the end, I cried. Not because it was sad, but because it felt so satisfying to see these two flawed, lovable characters find their way to each other and to themselves.

In short: heartwarming, clever, and bittersweet. I adored it.
