The Big Chill by Doug Johnstone – β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…β˜…

Doug Johnstone has done it again with The Big Chill, the second instalment in the Skelfs series. This book is a masterclass in blending dark humour with gripping storytelling.

The Skelf womenβ€”Dorothy, Jenny, and Hannahβ€”are back, juggling their roles as funeral directors and private investigators in Edinburgh. Their lives are anything but quiet, especially when a car crashes into an open grave during a funeral, setting off a chain of events that unearths secrets and challenges their resilience.

Johnstone’s writing is sharp and witty, capturing the complexities of family dynamics and the macabre aspects of their professions. The characters are richly developed, each dealing with personal demons while navigating the chaos around them.

What I particularly enjoyed was the seamless intertwining of multiple storylines, each adding depth and intrigue to the narrative. The pacing is perfect, keeping me engaged from start to finish.

In summary, The Big Chill is a compelling read that balances humour and suspense with skill. It’s a testament to Johnstone’s talent that he can make a story about death and investigation so entertaining and thought-provoking.
