BOOK REVIEW – Yellowface by R.F. Kuang #bookblogger #Reader #booktwt #Bookreview #Scottishbookblogger #2024Bookreview #Yellowface

THIS IS ONE HELL OF A STORY.

IT’S JUST NOT HERS TO TELL.

When failed writer June Hayward witnesses her rival Athena Liu die in a freak accident, she sees her opportunity… and takes it.

So what if it means stealing Athena’s final manuscript?

So what if it means ‘borrowing’ her identity?

And so what if the first lie is only the beginning…

Finally, June has the fame she always deserved. But someone is about to expose her…

What happens next is entirely everyone else’s fault.

Book Review

I initially postponed reading the book due to all the hype surrounding it. I wanted to wait until the buzz had died down and I could read it without feeling pressured to like it. However, I found it to be clever, poignant, and in some places, very true to life in the publishing world.

I particularly loved the premise of one writer stealing another’s work and having it published. The stress of maintaining such a lie would be incredibly taxing. How could someone live with that kind of deception?

I was also drawn to the character of June, who was unapologetically straightforward. Her story served as a great lesson on the idea that we often perceive other people’s situations as better than our own, when in reality, we just need to nurture and care for our own circumstances to achieve positive outcomes.

I must say, the cover art of the book is genius! I absolutely love it, and it’s a fantastic way to market the book. When it was first published, my social media feeds were dominated by the striking yellow colour.

Overall, it was a thoroughly satisfying read. I’ve also heard that the audiobook version is very good.
