As the night drew in on this lovely summer evening, I had the joy and pleasure of sitting in the Festival Theatre with anticipation of The Beyond Broadway Experience’s production of CATS. I have never seen the original or watched the movie. So I went in not knowing what to expect. 

I have to say I had the best ever experience. This is by far my favourite performance by BBEXP. It has everything you want from a performance. Professionalism, great singing and dancing. Along with excellent stage production and live orchestra.  

The musical tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles and the night they make the “Jellicle choice” by deciding which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life.

Meeting each cat through a song story was very special. They were all so unique and each actor fitted perfectly into their role.  The star of the show for me personally was Kirsty Montgomery as Grizabella. I was moved to tears when she sang Memories. But the entire performance would not work as well as it did with the talent that each of the performers brought to the stage. 

I heard before the show that the cast only has ten whole days of rehearsal and that there are around 180 kittens and cats on stage.  Ten days to get the production as amazing as it is, blows my mind. 

There are two performances on Saturday the 27th of July and I say run, don’t walk and have an evening of pure joy.  I am a huge cat lover but you don’t need to be to enjoy this performance, you just need to have a love of musical theatre and of watching very talented young people act and dance their hearts out.
