Strange Sally Diamond by Liz Nugent

Back of the Book
Sally Diamond cannot understand why what she did was so strange. She was only doing what her father told her to do, to put him out with the rubbish when he died.
Now Sally is the centre of attention, not only from the hungry media and worried police, but also a sinister voice from a past she has no memory of. As she begins to discover the horrors of her childhood, recluse Sally steps into the world for the first time, making new friends, finding independence, and learning that people don’t always mean what they say.
But when messages start arriving from a stranger who knows far more about her past than she knows herself, Sally’s life will be thrown into chaos once again . . .
BOOK REVIEW

Liz Nugent’s “Strange Sally Diamond” had me completely captivated, at least until the end. Despite my disappointment with how things wrapped up, I was thoroughly engaged by Sally Diamond’s story. Nugent brilliantly portrayed a character who has experienced severe trauma and the effects that has had on her life.
Sally Diamond’s perspective is a unique one, and Nugent writes it masterfully. She can’t comprehend why everyone thinks what she did was so odd when she was simply following her father’s wishes and putting him out with the trash after he died. But as Sally begins to unravel the mysteries of her past and confront the horrors she’s faced, her life takes a terrifying turn.
I loved how Nugent explores Sally’s journey from a reclusive outsider to an independent young woman. Watching Sally make new friends and come into her own was incredibly gratifying. However, just when things seem to be going well for Sally, a stranger enters her life and starts sending messages that reveal the darkest secrets of her past.
Despite my dissatisfaction with the ending, I must say that “Strange Sally Diamond” is a highly engrossing and intriguing read. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers and characters that stick with you long after the final page.
