Wanderers by Chuck Wendig

Back of the Book
Shana wakes up one morning to discover her little sister in the grip of a strange malady. She appears to be sleepwalking. She cannot talk and cannot be woken up. And she is heading with inexorable determination to a destination that only she knows. But Shana and her sister are not alone. Soon they are joined by a flock of sleepwalkers from across America, on the same mysterious journey. And like Shana, there are other “shepherds” who follow the flock to protect their friends and family on the long dark road ahead.
For as the sleepwalking phenomenon awakens terror and violence in America, the real danger may not be the epidemic but the fear of it. With society collapsing all around them–and an ultraviolent militia threatening to exterminate them–the fate of the sleepwalkers depends on unravelling the mystery behind the epidemic. The terrifying secret will either tear the nation apart–or bring the survivors together to remake a shattered world.
BOOK REVIEW

When I first picked up “Wanderers” by Chuck Wendig, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Little did I know that I was about to embark on an astonishing journey filled with mystery, suspense, and thought-provoking moments. This slow-burn novel took me by surprise, capturing my attention from the very first page and refusing to let go until the very end.
The story revolves around Shana, a young girl who wakes up one morning to find her sister afflicted with a strange malady. Unable to speak or be woken up, her sister starts sleepwalking, seemingly on a predetermined path that only she knows. As the days pass, Shana realizes that her sister is not alone in this affliction. Across America, countless others join the sleepwalkers, creating a flock on a mysterious journey. And amidst them are the shepherds, individuals tasked with protecting their loved ones on this perilous road.
Chuck Wendig masterfully creates a tapestry of characters, each with its own distinct personality and background. Every character adds depth and richness to the story, from the decadent rock star to the deeply religious radio host, and even the disgraced scientist. However, it is Shana who steals the show, capturing my heart with her determination, bravery, and unwavering love for her sister. She is the world’s last hope, and her journey kept me on the edge of my seat.
What makes “Wanderers” an exceptional read is the quality of Wendig’s writing. The prose flows effortlessly, immersing the reader into a world filled with terror and violence. The suspense is palpable, and the twists and turns keep you guessing until the very end. I found myself completely absorbed, unable to tear my eyes away from the pages. Wendig’s ability to weave together multiple storylines and create a complex narrative is awe-inspiring.
The pacing of the novel is deliberate and methodical, building tension with each passing chapter. This is a slow burn that pays off in a big way. Wendig takes his time to develop the characters and the world they inhabit, allowing the reader to truly understand their motivations and fears. This attention to detail creates a connection between the reader and the characters, making their journey all the more impactful.
“Wanderers” is not just a thrilling tale of survival; it is also a thought-provoking exploration of humanity. As the sleepwalkers traverse a nation in chaos, where fear reigns supreme, the real danger becomes not the epidemic itself, but the reaction to it. Wendig forces us to confront our own fears and prejudices, challenging us to consider how we would behave in such dire circumstances. This introspection adds depth to the story and elevates it beyond a mere apocalyptic thriller.
In conclusion, “Wanderers” by Chuck Wendig is a truly exceptional read.
