Finlay Donovan Is Killing It by Elle Cosimano

Finlay Donovan is killing it…except, sheβs really not. A stressed-out single mom of two and struggling novelist, Finlayβs life is in chaos: The new book she promised her literary agent isnβt written; her ex-husband fired the nanny without telling her; and this morning she had to send her four-year-old to school with hair duct-taped to her head after an incident with scissors.
When Finlay is overheard discussing the plot of her new suspense novel with her agent over lunch, sheβs mistaken for a contract killer and inadvertently accepts an offer to dispose of a problem husband in order to make ends meet. She soon discovers that crime in real life is a lot more difficult than its fictional counterpart, as she becomes tangled in a real-life murder investigation.
Fast-paced, deliciously witty, and wholeheartedly authentic in depicting the frustrations and triumphs of motherhood in all its messiness, hilarity, and heartfelt moments.
BOOK REVIEW

Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is an absolute gem of a book that had me laughing out loud from beginning to end. Elle Cosimano has truly created a character that is reminiscent of Stephanie Plum from the Janet Evanovich novels. Finlay Donovan is a stressed-out single mom, a struggling novelist, and an accidental contract killer all rolled into one.
The chaos that surrounds Finlay’s life is both relatable and hilarious. From her unfinished book to her ex-husband’s nanny-firing antics, every page is filled with outrageous situations that had me gasping for air with laughter. But it’s not just the humour that makes this book a five-star read. Cosimano has expertly woven in a murder investigation that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.
As Finlay dives into her accidental role as a contract killer, she quickly realizes that real-life crime is nothing like what she’s written in her suspense novels. She fumbles through each task, often finding herself in even more trouble than before. The mishaps and misadventures she encounters had me turning pages faster than ever, eager to see how she would get herself out of each predicament.
But it’s not just the fast-paced plot and laugh-out-loud moments that make this book shine. Cosimano has also managed to capture the essence of motherhood in all its messy glory. The frustrations, triumphs, and heartfelt moments that come with raising children are depicted with authenticity and tenderness. Finlay’s love for her children shines through even in the midst of chaos, making her a truly relatable and lovable character.
The witty dialogue and clever banter between the characters only add to the enjoyment of this book. Cosimano’s writing style is sharp, smart, and addictive. The way she brings each scene to life had me fully immersed in Finlay’s world, eagerly awaiting the next twist and turn.
Overall, Finlay Donovan Is Killing It is a brilliant and entertaining read that had me hooked from the first page. It’s a perfect blend of humour, suspense, and heartfelt moments. If you’re a fan of Janet Evanovich or enjoy a good laugh-out-loud mystery, then this book is a must-read. Elle Cosimano has certainly solidified herself as a master of comedic crime fiction, and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
