Titanic The Musical

Review by Kelly Lacey

As I stepped into the Edinburgh Festival Theatre, I was eager to watch Titanic The Musical, a production that promised to be stunning and stirring. The play is based on real people who boarded the infamous Titanic, and it explores their hopes, dreams, and aspirations. It was fascinating to see how these passengers, from the Third Class immigrants to the millionaire Barons of the First Class, each boarded the ship with unique stories and personal ambitions, all unaware of the fate that awaited them.

The show opened with the ship’s crew and passengers setting sail, and the first act was full of lively musical numbers that set the stage for what was to come. As the story progressed, I was struck by how well the actors embodied their roles and how convincingly they brought these historical figures to life.

The Second Act of the play focused on the tragic events that unfolded as the ship hit the iceberg, and the atmosphere in the theatre shifted to a more sombre tone. The production did a great job of recreating the sense of chaos and urgency as the passengers realised the gravity of their situation.

The final moments of the show were poignant and emotional as we watched the passengers’ lives and dreams unravel before our eyes. It was a heart-wrenching reminder of the 1,517 lives lost that tragic night.

One of the highlights of the show was undoubtedly the music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, which were absolutely beautiful. Each song was poignant and well-crafted, perfectly complementing the narrative of the play. Yeston’s work has been rightly recognized with several awards, including an Academy Award, an Emmy Award, an Olivier Award, and three Tony Awards.

Overall, I found Titanic The Musical to be an excellent production, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for an emotional and thought-provoking theatrical experience. It’s easy to see why the show won several awards, including Best Musical, Best Score, and Best Book, on Broadway, and swept critical acclaim when it premiered in London. The performances, music, and storytelling were all top-notch, and the entire production left a lasting impression on me. I left the theatre feeling both moved and inspired.
