What book truly inspired your life and why?

I guess I would have to say The Power is Within You by Louise Hay. At a difficult time in my life, I read this book and it gave me the strength to regroup, reboot and move on.

How did you pick who you dedicated your book to?

This is an easy one, as I have a list. My first book was dedicated to my mom, husband and sons, my second one to my sister. The next one will be to my best friend.

Did you do a lot of research for your book? 

The hero of The Truth Lies Buried, Carver Rodgers, is a specialist woodcarver who uses chainsaw carving to let off steam. I needed to know more about what equipment he would need and what protective clothing he would wear. My husband nearly fell off his chair when I said I wanted to accompany him to The Tool Show at Kempton Park Racecourse. The staff on the Makita power tool stand were golden – they marked up a brochure with the correct clothing and saw and demonstrated the moves to carve a log with a chainsaw.

A lot of other things in this book are things from my own experience. Family history research has been my main hobby for many years and yes, I once met a lady who was researching the ghost in her house. I went on a weekend course to learn to play a bodhran a few years ago, so it seemed to make sense to give my hero one to play.

What was your favourite read of 2017?

 This is a difficult question as I loved so many books in 2017. I’ve opted for one that is both funny and serious. It features a very different heroine who is in her eighties – The Gin Shack on the Beach by Catherine Miller.

If you had to take three books on a desert island what would they be?

Another difficult question as I would want to take a library or at least a trunk full of books.

I’ll opt for Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert, Wintercombe by Pamela Belle and my favourite volume of poetry, River Flow by David Whyte.

Can you tell us a little about your publishing journey?

I have always enjoyed reading and writing. Like many of my contemporaries, my imagination was fired by a rich feast of Enid Blyton books. Even my latest novel, The Truth Lies Buried has buried “treasure”.

After school, my writing consisted mostly of papers for university, reports and training materials for work. It wasn’t until I had my second son and found myself unwell and unable to return to work that I started writing fiction again. Following a short story competition win, I decided to study creative writing and attended lots of courses. I joined the Romantic Novelists’ Association New Writer’s Scheme in 2012. The scheme allows you to send a novel a year for critique by a published writer and proved invaluable in helping me hone a manuscript to a publishable standard. In 2016, I won Choc Lit Publishing’s Search for a Star competition with my debut novel The Girl on the Beach.

 What would you like your readers to know before starting your book?

The Truth Lies Buried is my second novel for Choc Lit and although it is the second book in my Borteen Secrets Series, it is a stand-alone book.

Do you have any questions that you would like to ask your readers?

I am writing a series of books for Choc Lit based in my fictional seaside town of Borteen – The Borteen Secrets Series. If you have read The Girl on the Beach or The Truth Lies Buried, which of the secondary characters would you like me to feature in their own story next?

Biography for Morton S. Gray

Morton lives with her husband, two sons and Lily, the tiny white dog, in Worcestershire, U.K. She has been reading and writing fiction for as long as she can remember, penning her first attempt at a novel aged fourteen. She is a member of the Romantic Novelists’ Association and The Society of Authors.

Her debut novel ‘The Girl on the Beach ’was ePublished in January 2017, after she won The Choc Lit Publishing Search for a Star competition. The story follows a woman with a troubled past as she tries to unravel the mystery surrounding her son’s headteacher, Harry Dixon. This book is available as a paperback from 10 April 2018.

Morton’s second book for Choc Lit ‘The Truth Lies Buried’ is published as an eBook on 1 May 2018. Another romantic suspense novel, the book tells the story of Jenny Simpson and Carver Rodgers as they uncover secrets from their past.

Morton previously worked in the electricity industry in committee services, staff development and training. She has a Business Studies degree and is a fully qualified clinical hypnotherapist and Reiki Master. She also has diplomas in Tuina acupressure massage and energy field therapy. She enjoys crafts, history and loves tracing family trees. Having a hunger for learning new things is a bonus for the research behind her books.
