Shore Poets | Scotland ~ @ShorePoets #Edinburgh #Poets

Well, my world was opened up in a wonderful way last night. I was invited to the Shore Poets, open mic event hosted at Outhouse Bar in Edinburgh.  I had no idea what to expect. My mind racing with scenarios of what the event may be like. These were all surpassed and it really was a very special enjoyable evening.

It may have been my first experience of a Poetry event, but it will not be last.  The room was set with a beautiful ambiance of colour. With both professional and amateur poets mingling happily.  The feeling in the room was easy and welcoming. It was not what I had expected. I thought it was going to be very stiff and formal. It was an endearing safe space for the poets to open their hearts and voices to the room.

Musician Kirsty Law entertained us with her talented and haunting voice, throughout the evening.  I hope to do a review of Kirsty’s upcoming work on the blog very soon.

Magma Poetry Prize winner Jane Mckie was the main event, reading several of her prize winning poems.  Which were all well received.  I really enjoyed the poem about the baby monster with the eye in his leg.

We were entertained with a whole host of talented poets throughout the evening. Featuring the following: Blair Ewing, Nicole Carter, Stephanie Green, Carol Harley, Alan Waddell, Rex Sweeny, Georgie March, Jen McGregor, Lauren Frost, Matt Macdonald and Moira Cormack.

I had two favourite poems of the night, the first was Blair Ewings Shanghai Husbands and the poem and performance that stole the evening for me was written and read with such poise, emotion, and heart by Moira Cormack. The poem was entitled ‘Dad’ and it resonated so deeply with me.  I found Ms Cormack’s reading to be so deeply moving, honest and raw.

It was so inspiring to see all the poets, opening their souls  and be being brave to reveal their thoughts and work to the room. I was very impressed.

Thank you to Blair Ewing for the copy of his wonderful book.

Huge thanks to Frank Glynn and Shore Poets for the mention of Love Books Group Blog at the event. Greatly appreciated.

I cannot wait to attend next month’s event. You can find out more about the Shore Poets on Twitter ~ @ShorePoets or stop by their Blog
