My Q&A with Julie Ryan

Describe yourself using three words?

Loyal. quirky, impetuous

What inspired you to write your first novel?

It was a way of reminiscing about the time I spent in Greece during the 1980s. I never envisaged writing a novel though; it was only after a chance meeting with another writer that I developed a short story into ‘Jenna’s Journey’.

What time of day do you like to write?

Preferably in the mornings as that’s when I feel freshest. Typically though it’s the middle of the night when I have a great brainwave for plot development.

What is your favourite book and why?

I love John Fowles’ The Magus as he captures perfectly the magic of Greece. Each time I read it I discover something new.

How did you pick the title of your book?

Originally the book was to have been called Jenny’s Journey. However, as is often the way, a few months in my character spoke and became Jenna. The book is about the physical journey as well as the life-changing consequences that ensue, so it seems a fitting title.

Are the characters in your book based on real people?

The characters are not based on any one real person but inevitably as a writer you draw on your own experiences, taking a quirk from one, a foible from another. There’s a lot of me in Jenna but she’s definitely her own woman.

What’s your favourite word?

Discombobulation

If you were a colour what would it be?

Blue

Do you plan your story beforehand or go with the flow?

I have a vague idea of the plot and a handful of characters and then I see where it takes me. That usually means endless revisions but it’s just the way I write.

Who is your favourite Author?

I love Victoria Hislop.

Are you working on a new project?

I’m currently working on something completely different about three sisters who all gather at their father’s deathbed with a secret.
