๐Ÿ“š The Den by Keith Gray
Illustrated by Tom Clohosy Cole

Although this book is aimed at readers aged 11 and up, I genuinely loved it and found it such a satisfying read.

As the summer holidays begin, Marshall feels an overwhelming need to escape a home filled with tension and worry. His friend Rory, on the other hand, is simply excited for the freedom that summer brings. When the two boys head out on their bikes and stumble across a long-forgotten underground bunker hidden in the woods, they discover what becomes their den, a place that will test their friendship in ways neither of them expected.

What begins as an adventure quickly becomes something much deeper. Rivalry, secrets and betrayal begin to surface, and the boys are forced to confront the fragility of their friendship.

I thought this was such a thoughtful and purposeful story. It captures that moment in life where childhood begins to shift into something more complicated, and emotions suddenly feel bigger and harder to understand. The themes of friendship, loyalty and growing up are handled with real sensitivity.

The illustrations add another layer to the story and make the atmosphere of the bunker feel vivid and immersive.

For me, The Den feels like the perfect bridge between children’s books and early YA. Itโ€™s engaging and accessible, but also carries emotional weight and meaning.

A short but powerful story about friendship, trust and those early moments when growing up suddenly feels very real.
