Author: Jacque Gorelick
Genre: Memoir
Pages: 292
Publisher: Vine Leaves Press

Blurb

After losing her mother at eight, Jacque Gorelick spends her childhood moving between temporary homes, searching for belonging.

In her twenties, she falls in love, marries, and has a baby — finally finding a glimpse of stability. But everything changes on a day that begins in sunshine and ends with a frantic 911 call, when her husband collapses on a jogging trail.

What follows is a harrowing stretch in an ICU waiting room. While advocating for her comatose husband’s life, caring for a newborn, navigating complicated family dynamics, and confronting the ghosts of her fractured childhood, Jacque must find a way forward.

Map of a Heart is a deeply personal exploration of what it means to build a life when the foundation was broken from the start. For anyone who has ever wondered what truly makes a family, this memoir offers an answer rooted in resilience, hope and unconditional love.

✍️ About the Author

Jacque Gorelick is a former elementary school teacher who later became a freelance writer. After growing up in a fractured childhood, she pursued degrees in psychology and education at San Francisco State University and has long been fascinated by how family shapes us — and how we ultimately choose to define it for ourselves.

Her essays exploring identity, motherhood and belonging have appeared in The New York Times, Salon, The Washington Post, Los Angeles Review of Books, The Kenyon Review, HuffPost and many others.

A California native, Jacque now lives in the San Francisco Bay Area beside a creek under redwood trees with her husband, two sons and a wonderful collection of rescue animals.
