📖 Scattered Light by Martha Engber

Scattered Light is the sequel to Winter Light, an IPPY Gold Medal winner in YA, in which teen Mary fights to save herself during the blizzard winter of 1978–79 from the poverty and addiction that plague her family. Set in 1999, Scattered Light finds Mary years later, having insulated herself from further harm — until she falls in love with a humble but world-famous Ugandan human rights lawyer who barely escaped Idi Amin’s brutal regime.
When his life is endangered, Mary must fight for him as she once fought for her teen self. Almost losing him dredges up the trauma of her youth, forcing her to face a painful truth: to protect herself, she must first bare her soul.
Hair-raising yet inspiring, Scattered Light illuminates a simple truth — to fully love others, you must first learn to love yourself.
👩💻 About the Author – Martha Engber
Martha Engber is the author of The Wind Thief and Growing Great Characters from the Ground Up. A journalist by profession, she’s written hundreds of articles for the Chicago Tribune and other publications. Her creative work spans fiction, poetry, and playwriting, with one of her plays produced in Hollywood.
A workshop facilitator and speaker, Martha lives in Northern California with her husband, bike, and surfboard. You can find out more about her and her books at marthaengber.com.
