Book Review: The Sublet by Greer Hendricks

I was really intrigued by the premise of The Sublet. As someone who enjoys character-driven thrillers, the idea of a struggling ghostwriter being drawn into the world of an enigmatic self-help guru sounded right up my street.

The first half hooked me — Greer Hendricks paints Anne’s chaotic life with sharp detail, and the creeping sense of unease builds nicely. The glamorous yet slightly off-kilter aura of Melody was particularly well done, and the sublet itself had a deliciously sinister vibe.

However, for me, the story lost a little steam in the second half. The pacing felt uneven and some plot threads didn’t quite land as strongly as I’d hoped. I also found the resolution a touch underwhelming compared to the tension that had been built.

That said, Hendricks’ writing is engaging and the set-up is compelling. If you enjoy domestic suspense with a slow-burn mystery and a touch of glamour-gone-wrong, this is worth a read — I just wanted a little more punch in the payoff.
