When the City Sleeps: A Thriller That Woke Me Up! Manhattan Down by Michael Cordy @MichaelCordy @TransworldBooks @Soph_RansomPR #Bookreview #BookBlogger #ScottishBookBlogger

It’s not often a book comes along that completely reignites your love of reading—but Manhattan Down did exactly that for me.

From the very first page, I was hooked. The concept is bold and chilling: New York City—on the anniversary of 9/11—suddenly and inexplicably falls silent. Millions of people collapse, unconscious, and no one knows why. No one, that is, except two survivors: Samantha Rossi, a single mother in emotional freefall, and Nick Lockwood, an NYPD detective who literally wakes into chaos. It’s a scenario that dares to imagine the unimaginable, and it unfolds with breathtaking urgency.

The tension is relentless. The writing is sharp, cinematic and emotionally resonant, balancing global terror with intimate, human stakes. I found myself completely invested in both Samantha and Nick—not just in their survival, but in who they are and what drives them. Their motivations felt real, flawed, and deeply human.

What stayed with me most, though, was the atmosphere. The sweltering, oppressive heat. The eerie silence of a city that’s always moving. The weight of unanswered questions. It all builds to a haunting sense of dread and possibility that made it impossible to put down.

This is a thriller with brains, heart and a conscience. It raises terrifyingly timely questions about climate, leadership, and the fragility of the world we take for granted. But it never loses sight of its characters or the story they have to tell.

Manhattan Down reminded me why I fell in love with reading in the first place. It’s gripping, thought-provoking, and utterly unforgettable.

Highly, highly recommended.
