The Guest by B.A. Paris

I recently read The Guest by B.A. Paris, and it was a slow burn that was well worth the wait. Paris’s writing is beautiful and meticulously plotted, drawing me into the story with its subtle suspense and intricate character dynamics.

The story begins with Iris and Gabriel returning from a make-or-break holiday, only to find their friend Laure in their home—sleeping in their bed, wearing Iris’s clothes, and rearranging the furniture. Laure has left her husband, Pierre, after his confession of an affair, and her unpredictable presence starts to unravel secrets from all their pasts.

While the pacing is deliberate, it allows for a deep exploration of the characters and their relationships. The tension builds gradually, leading to a satisfying climax that ties together the various threads of the narrative.

I appreciated the contemporary fiction elements with a sprinkling of mild thriller, which kept me engaged without overwhelming the story. Paris has a knack for creating atmospheric settings and complex characters that linger in your mind long after you’ve finished reading.

Overall, The Guest is a compelling read that rewards patience with a rich and thought-provoking story.
