The Housemaid Is Watching by Freida McFadden

As a huge fan of Freida McFadden’s The Housemaid and The Housemaid’s Secret, I was eagerly awaiting the release of The Housemaid Is Watching. McFadden has a talent for crafting tense, psychological thrillers that are impossible to put down, so I was excited to see where she would take the story next. However, I have to admit that this latest instalment left me feeling a bit deflated.

One of the biggest challenges for me was the huge time jump between the events of the first two books and this one. It felt like a significant leap, and as a result, the characters and the storyline didn’t feel as familiar or as tightly woven as before. The time jump created a bit of distance from the tension and energy I had loved in the earlier books, and it almost felt like I was reading a completely new story rather than a continuation of the series I’d become so invested in.

While McFadden’s sharp writing and suspenseful atmosphere are still present, the plot itself felt a bit less believable this time around. The twists and turns that were so masterfully executed in The Housemaid and The Housemaid’s Secret just didn’t land with the same intensity here. The sense of urgency that kept me turning pages late into the night wasn’t as strong, and I found myself struggling to connect with the storyline in the same way.

That said, there are still some thrilling moments and surprises, and McFadden continues to build tension in her signature way. If you’ve been following the series, it’s definitely worth reading to see how things play out, but for me, it didn’t quite match the high standard set by the first two books. I’m hoping that the next instalment will bring back the gripping, edge-of-your-seat storytelling that made the series such a standout in the first place.

While The Housemaid Is Watching may not have captured me as fully as its predecessors, McFadden’s writing remains compelling, and I’m still looking forward to whatever she comes up with next. Here’s hoping the next chapter returns to the tightly plotted suspense and richly developed characters that made the earlier books so memorable!

Back of the Book

I used to clean other people’s houses—now, I can’t believe this home is actually mine. The charming kitchen, the quiet cul-de-sac, the huge yard where my kids can play. My husband and I saved for years to give our children the life they deserve.

Even though I’m wary of our new neighbor Mrs. Lowell, when she invites us over for dinner it’s our chance to make friends. Her maid opens the door wearing a white apron, her hair in a tight bun. I know exactly what it’s like to be in her shoes. But her cold stare gives me chills…

The Lowells’ maid isn’t the only strange thing on our street. I’m sure I see a shadowy figure watching us. My husband leaves the house late at night. And when I meet a woman who lives across the way, her words chill me to the bone: Be careful of your neighbors.

Did I make a terrible mistake moving my family here?

I thought I’d left my darkest secrets behind. But could this quiet suburban street be the most dangerous place of all?
