The Music Man

After a show-stopping, high-flying performance of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang last year. Southern Light is back with Meredith Willson’s The Music Man

When experienced con man Harold Hill arrives in River City he soon convinces the town to buy instruments and uniforms for a boys’ band, but will Mr Hill teach the youth of the town how to play ‘Seventy Six Trombones’ or will there be ‘Trouble’ for him yet?

Featuring well-known songs like ‘Seventy Six Trombones’ and ‘Till there was you’ this show is sure to leave you humming along for days.

This amateur production is presented by arrangement with Music Theatre International. All authorised performance materials are also supplied by MTI.

Book, Music and Lyrics by Meredith Wilson. Story by Meredith Wilson and Franklin Lacey.

The Music Man is one of my all-time favourite movies and soundtrack. It is my go-to feel good factor to pick me up. After reviewing last years production of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, I knew the high standard of performance I would be attending but would it live up to my very high expectations?

John Bruce as Prof Harold Hill and Rebekah Lansley as Marian Paroo were a match made for the stage. Their believable chemistry and energy filled every performance.

The duo number between Peter Tomassi and John Bruce was funny and memorable. I wonder how many rehearsals it took to get it so perfect.

The music performed in real life was out of this world. The whole cast bringing my favourite music to life was something I won’t ever forget.

As I say every time in my reviews about l Southern Light productions the performance is so professional from the cast, set, music and the crew. All working together to give us a night to remember.

The detail in the set for the Southern Light production is always brilliant down to tiny details such as a hare hopping across the backdrop.

My two special mentions for this performance are for Eliza Cormack (Amarlyiss) and Oliver Thomson (Winthrop Paroo) they owned their scenes and were absolutely terrific. I saw Oliver last year in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and look forward to more performances from both.

My favourite performance of the night was Marian The Librarian. It was perfect from start to finish.

I urge you to book tickets and take the family. It is entertaining for everyone. I saw a wide age range of audience members all enjoying the performance and clapping along.

As you leave the theatre there are collection buckets for all your loose change and notes. These go to the Maggie’s charity. You can find out more about Maggie’s here: https://www.maggies.org/our-centres/maggies-edinburgh/
