Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures

Edward Scissorhands

Matthew Bourne’s magical dance production of Edward Scissorhands has carved a place in the hearts of audiences worldwide since its premiere in 2005.

Based on the classic Tim Burton movie and featuring the hauntingly beautiful music of Danny Elfman and Terry Davies, Bourne and his New Adventures Company return to this witty, bittersweet story of an incomplete boy left alone in a strange new world.

In a castle high on a hill lives Edward; a boy created by an eccentric inventor. When his creator dies, he is left alone and unfinished, with only scissors for hands – until a kindly townswoman invites him to live with her suburban family. Can Edward find his place in the well-meaning community, which struggles to see past his curious appearance to the innocence and gentleness within?

Theatre Review

I adored the movie version of Edward Scissorhands and when I saw it announced at Capital Theatres, Edinburgh, I was so excited. I won’t try to make my review fancy, I will just tell you what I enjoyed. From start to finish I was mesmerised. The skills of the dancers are incredible. Throw in their ability to act  at the same time and the fusion of the two just elevates your experience in the audience. You would think it would be a long two hours without any spoken words but they just weren’t needed. It breaks down any language barriers and makes the performance so universally available to everyone.

If you have ever felt like you didn’t belong or had something about you that made you different to others. Then you will resonate with Edward. You will feel the emotion through the music based on the original movie score by  Danny Elfman with new musical arrangement by Terry Davies. Which I will be adding to my favourite playlist on Spotify. With the addition of highly skilled dancers who along with the music make you feel so many things as they dance. This performance goes above and beyond anything else I have ever experienced at the theatre.

The big group performances have so much going on that I feel that you saw something different going on no matter where you looked on the stage. It was sensory overload in the best possible way.

Liam Mower owned the stage and made the whole experience for me incredibly moving and unforgettable. Never breaking character with such gentleness. It was beautiful to watch.

The theatre was packed and what was so interesting to be a part of was the total silence through the duration of the performance. It was like magic had hypnotised the audience and in a way it had. Through the energy of the dance  and the music.

If you are a fan of the musicals or the original movie you can go in the knowledge you will be entertained. A perfect show for everyone (over 8 years old).

The show is leaving the UK at the end of May before heading to Amsterdam so this is a great opportunity for you to see it.  This was my first Sir Matthew Bourne production and I am excited about Swan Lake coming to the Festival Theatre in 2025. Sleeping Beauty is also available on the BBC iPlayer so I will be watching that this weekend.

The performance runs until the 18th of May. I cannot recommend it enough. An uplifting smorgasbord for all the senses.

Thank you to Capital Theatres for my gifted ticket in an exchange for an honest review.
