The Electric Kingdom by David Arnold

Back of the Book
New York Times bestseller David Arnold’s most ambitious novel to date; Station Eleven meets The 5th Wave in a genre-smashing story of survival, hope, and love amid a ravaged earth.
When a deadly Fly Flu sweeps the globe, it leaves a shell of the world that once was. Among the survivors are eighteen-year-old Nico and her dog, on a voyage devised by Nico’s father to find a mythical portal; a young artist named Kit, raised in an old abandoned cinema; and the enigmatic Deliverer, who lives Life after Life in an attempt to put the world back together. As swarms of infected Flies roam the earth, these few survivors navigate the woods of post-apocalyptic New England, meeting others along the way, each on their own quest to find life and love in a world gone dark. The Electric Kingdom is a sweeping exploration of art, storytelling, eternal life, and above all, a testament to the notion that even in an exterminated world, one person might find beauty in another.

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I recently dove into David Arnold’s “The Electric Kingdom,” and I was thoroughly captivated by the intricacies of this post-apocalyptic narrative. The novel combines elements of Station Eleven and The 5th Wave, delivering a genre-smashing story that explores survival, hope, and love in the aftermath of a devastating global pandemic.
The characters in “The Electric Kingdom” are truly the heart of the story. Eighteen-year-old Nico and her loyal canine companion embark on a journey guided by Nico’s father’s vision of a mythical portal. Alongside them is Kit, a young artist with a unique upbringing in an old abandoned cinema, and the mysterious Deliverer, living Life after Life in an attempt to rebuild the shattered world. Each character brings a distinct perspective to the narrative, and I found myself deeply invested in their individual quests.
What sets Arnold’s novel apart is the seamless way he weaves these characters’ stories together. The connections and intersections between their paths create a rich tapestry of post-apocalyptic life, adding depth to the overall narrative. The exploration of art, storytelling, and the pursuit of eternal life adds layers of complexity to the plot, making it more than just a survival story.
As swarms of infected Flies roam the post-apocalyptic landscape of New England, the characters navigate the challenges of their new reality. Arnold masterfully depicts the desolate world while infusing moments of beauty and connection, highlighting the resilience of the human spirit even in the darkest times.
“The Electric Kingdom” left me reflecting on the power of human connection, the importance of art in preserving our humanity, and the enduring possibility of finding beauty in the bleakest of circumstances. David Arnold has crafted a compelling and thought-provoking novel that lingers in the mind long after the final page is turned.
