The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna (Author) Samara MacLaren (Narrator)

Back of the Book
She found magic in the most unlikely of places.
A cosy, heartwarming and uplifting magical romance about an isolated witch whose opportunity to embrace a quirky new family—and a new love—changes the course of her life.
As one of the few witches in Britain, Mika Moon has lived her life by three rules: hide your magic, keep your head down, and stay away from other witches. An orphan raised by strangers from a young age, Mika is good at being alone, and she doesn’t mind it…mostly.
But then an unexpected message arrives, begging her to travel to the remote and mysterious Nowhere House to teach three young witches, and Mika jumps at the chance for a different life.
Nowhere House is nothing like she expects, and she’s quickly tangled up in the lives and secrets of its quirky, caring inhabitants…and Jamie, the handsome, prickly librarian who would do anything to protect his charges, and who sees Mika’s arrival as a threat. An irritatingly appealing threat.
As Mika finds her feet, the thought of belonging somewhere starts to feel like a real possibility. But magic isn’t the only danger in the world, and soon Mika will need to decide whether to risk everything to protect the found family she didn’t know she was looking for….
Book Review

“The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches” by Sangu Mandanna, narrated by Samara MacLaren, worked its enchantment on me in a way I never expected. I’ve attempted audiobooks before, only to find myself easily distracted, inevitably opting for the written version on my Kindle. However, during a period of illness when I lacked the energy for physical reading, I decided to give the audiobook a chance, and I’m glad I did.
This audiobook ignited a spark within me, and I was captivated by every chapter. Mika, the protagonist, is nothing short of brilliant and quickly became my new fictional best friend. Her blend of fragility and strength is truly awe-inspiring. “The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches” checked all the boxes for me.
There is, however, one aspect of the book that I found less appealing— the frequent swearing. While I don’t typically mind strong language in books, I felt that its presence here was unnecessary. Removing it would undoubtedly open the book up to a broader audience, as I believe more people could enjoy this wonderful story if the profanity were toned down. It’s a shame, as this minor drawback limits the range of readers to whom I can recommend the book.
I found myself wishing for a plethora of other titles by this author, eager to jump into the next adventure. Fortunately, I discovered that a new book is set to be released in 2024, which gives me something to look forward to.
I wholeheartedly encourage you to dive into this enchanting tale and meet Mika and the charming young witches in need of her guidance. It’s a transformative journey that will leave you changed as a reader, with Mika’s radiant presence lighting your way.
