Dead Man Driving by Lesley Kelly

Two years on from the start of a devastating pandemic, food shortages are becoming critical, and rationing looms. So it’s more than embarrassing when a lorry full of luxury food for the Scottish Virus Minister’s banquet goes missing. When Bernard and Maitland from the HET team find it, the food is gone – but there is a dead body.

BOOK REVIEW

“Dead Man Driving” by Lesley Kelly deserves a resounding five-star rating! As a devoted fan of this series from the very first book, I continue to be enamoured with the way Edinburgh itself becomes a dynamic character within the story.

In this latest instalment, set amidst a devastating flu pandemic two years in, the book masterfully portrays the dire consequences of food shortages and government rationing, which ignites turmoil in the streets. The indomitable Carlotta Carmichael MSP, a character I’ve come to admire, takes centre stage as she orchestrates a pivotal meeting of international Virus ministers.

The plot takes an exhilarating turn with the hijacking of a lorry loaded with luxury food meant for Carlotta’s ministerial dinner. She reluctantly calls upon the North Edinburgh Health Enforcement Team to recover the stolen goods, leading to the discovery of a deceased woman in the lorry’s hold.

“Dead Man Driving” captivated me from start to finish, keeping me on the edge of my seat without revealing any spoilers. The pervasive tension, hunger, and fear experienced by the characters make for a compelling and riveting read.

This book is a shining example of Lesley Kelly’s remarkable talent for crafting intricate characters and plots. I wholeheartedly recommend “Dead Man Driving” to fellow readers who relish thrilling mysteries set in a meticulously developed world where Edinburgh plays a pivotal role. Without a doubt, it deserves a solid five-star rating, and I eagerly anticipate the next instalment in this exceptional series!
