Steel Princess: A World of Magic, A World of Steel by April Grace

About the Book
Silver and Tinker come from different worlds, one of magic and one of steel. Silver wants to fit in with her human friends, but when the cruel Queen Magnolia’s soldiers come looking for their missing princess, Silver begins to question her own past. Tinker longs to know more about his own life and seeks to find answers at the Northern Mountain Sanctuary. When they meet, they embark on an adventure across the seas, discovering new friends and a world of magic. Together, they work towards making the world a fairer place for everyone.
Author Interview

April Grace has always lived in Milton Keynes, and now lives with her boyfriend and, a few nights a week, his two cheeky sons. She has been writing young adult novels for twelve years now, which all started when she decided to write stories on Wattpad while she was supposed to be working hard on modules for her A Levels. (But she did go onto study Creative Writing at university the following year, so it all worked out in the end.)
She has worked for a popular UK bookstore, has temporarily worked for Ingram Spark’s Milton Keynes warehouse, was formerly the Head of Literature for a London based charity providing creative opportunities for young people, and now owns her freelance editing company, Hooked On Words Editorial. She loves both reading and writing anything inspired by fairy tales and mythology.
She couldn’t be more grateful for all of the love and support.
Can you tell us a little about your publishing journey, please?
I have been writing since I was a teenager, and I’m now 29. I started querying my books in my early 20’s, and since then I have tried to get three books out there. My debut novel, Steel Princess, has taken many forms over the years, and I’ve queried different versions of it to different agents. I even had a full request and an R & R from an editor at Penguin, who inspired me to rewrite the book into a fantasy story. I chose to self publish after I started working as a freelance editor and watched many of my clients, and some author friends, go down that route. I published Steel Princess in July last year, and I haven’t looked back since.
How do you decide who to dedicate your books to?
My debut novel is dedicated to my entire family because it was hard to pick just one person. They have all been incredibly supportive. I have my partner and his boys, and my parents and sisters included. But my next release has strong maternal themes, and I lost my nanna a month ago, so it will probably be dedicated to my mum and female role models. I will probably fit different books to different people in my life.
What was the inspiration behind your latest release?
Honestly, I think it was just a random idea that popped into my head, as most ideas of mine are. But I tend to let ideas simmer over in my head for a while before I actually write them, and take a lot of inspiration in developing them from the books I read.
Do you find it hard to let your characters go when you finish writing the book?
Yes, they are always stuck in my head.
Who is your favourite author?
Teri Terry, or for fantasy, Marissa Meyer for sure!
Was there a point in your life that a book helped you get through, and which one?
Not really one in particular. Books have always been a great release for moments like when my grandparents have passed, for example.
Is there anyone that you would like to mention and thank for their support of your writing?
Everyone in my family, definitely. They have all been really supportive and I couldn’t be more grateful.
If you had the power to give everyone in the world one book, what would it be and why?
North Child by Edith Pattou, because everyone needs a good fantasy adventure on a white bear’s back!

What are you working on now?
I’m writing the sequel to my debut novel, Steel Princess, which is called Songbird Heir. And my next release is a dark retelling of Snow White.
