The Black Crescent by Jane Johnson

As I opened Jane Johnson’s The Black Crescent, I was transported to 1950s Morocco, a place brimming with magic, murder, and political upheaval. Hamou Badi, the protagonist, was born with the magical zouhry signs on his hands, and as a child, he hoped to use this power to uncover lost treasures. However, fate had other plans when he stumbled upon a dead body instead.

Johnson masterfully weaves Hamou’s story, taking us on a journey of self-discovery and justice. As Hamou becomes an officer of the law, his loyalty is divided as he tries to navigate the chaos of nationalist uprisings and his love for the country that has raised him. Johnson’s writing kept me at the edge of my seat, eagerly anticipating what would happen next.

The magical elements in the story were exciting and cleverly incorporated, creating a rich and immersive world. Johnson paints a vivid picture of Morocco’s culture and landscape, which further adds to the story’s depth. The characters were compelling, with their own motivations and desires that added to the complexity of the plot.

The Black Crescent is a thrilling novel that will captivate you from beginning to end. Johnson has once again proved her skill in weaving together magic and mystery to create a compelling story.

I was gifted a copy via Sophie Ransom and Head of Zeus in exchange for an honest review.
