My Not So Functional Family by Bridie Jabour

Claudia is getting married in a week. Well, she’s supposed to be.
Arriving back at her childhood home, Claudia is faced with spending the week with her her arguing siblings, dramatic mother, and nuisance aunt. Desperately awaiting the arrival of her best friend Nora for moral support, Claudia starts to question her relationship.
What if her ex-boyfriend was actually The One? And is downloading Tinder just before your wedding really that bad?
Claudia hopes Nora will help her face her insecurities, but she’s hiding secrets of her own. With the big day drawing near, and her family close to falling out, Claudia must decide what she really wants, or doesn’t want . . .

As soon as I finished reading My Not So Functional Family by Bridie Jabour, I knew I had to share my thoughts about this wonderful book with my readers. From the moment Claudia returns home, readers will feel the tensions and anxieties that build up between her siblings, mother and aunt.
This novel is full of relatable family dynamics that made me laugh out loud, shake my head in frustration and nod my head in understanding. Jabour has captured the struggles of families with different personalities trying to exist in the same space, and I think that’s what made the novel so special.
As Claudia gets closer to her wedding, she questions her relationships and starts to ponder the what-ifs that have been troubling her for some time. Her best friend Nora is the only one she can rely on for comfort, but as the novel progresses, readers will realize that Nora also has her secrets.
Throughout the novel, I felt a sense of foreboding that things might not turn out well for Claudia. There were so many times when I wanted to yell at her and tell her to get her life together. But, that’s what made her character feel real. She was flawed and didn’t always make the best decisions, but it only made her more relatable.
Jabour’s writing is easy to follow and very descriptive. I felt like I was in Claudia’s shoes, living out every moment of her wedding week with her dysfunctional family. The family dynamics felt very genuine, and there was never a moment where I felt like something was unrealistic.
The only thing that I wish Jabour would have included is more closure at the end of the novel. It left me with a sense of unfinished business. However, this might be intentional as family drama and relationships are not often neatly wrapped up.
Overall, I think My Not So Functional Family is an enjoyable, heartfelt and entertaining novel. It highlights the ups and downs of relationships and family dynamics, making it the perfect book for those who enjoy light-hearted dramas. For all of these reasons, I would rate this book a four-star read.
