Constellations by Kate Glasheen

I recently finished reading Kate Glasheen’s debut graphic novel, Constellations, and I must say, it is a truly compelling and poignant work. The story follows Claire, a queer teen living in Troy, New York in the 1980s, as they struggle with the constant questioning of their gender identity, alcohol addiction, and harassment from peers.
From the first page, Glasheen’s watercolour and ink illustrations draw you in and immerse you in Claire’s world. The raw emotions and struggles that Claire faces are conveyed in such a vivid and honest way, that I found myself fully invested in their journey from the very beginning.
The story’s exploration of the marginalization of queer individuals is timely and deeply important, as we still face similar issues in today’s society. Through Claire’s journey, Glasheen highlights the importance of creating safe spaces and support systems for those who feel like they don’t belong in mainstream society.
One of the most remarkable aspects of Constellations is the way Glasheen handles Claire’s addiction. She does not shy away from the dark reality of alcoholism and the devastating effects it can have on one’s life. However, she also emphasizes the healing power of friendship, therapy, and self-reflection. The group therapy scenes in the rehab centre are particularly moving and heartwarming.
At its core, Constellations is a story of hope, humour, and survival. Despite the hardships Claire faces, they are able to find strength in themselves and their community and work towards a better future. The final pages of the book left me with a sense of optimism and a feeling of gratitude for the healing power of human connection.
Overall, Kate Glasheen’s Constellations is a truly impressive debut graphic novel that tackles important social issues with grace and sensitivity. The stunning artwork, relatable characters, and thought-provoking themes make it a must-read for anyone interested in LGBTQ+ representation, addiction, and mental health. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a moving and insightful coming-of-age story.

A raw graphic novel debut about a queer teen living in the margins who is determined to find their way ahead.
Are you supposed to be a boy or a girl?
It’s a question that follows Claire everywhere. Inescapable on the street, in school, and even at home. A black hole forever trying to pull them in. But as long as they have ride-or-die best friend Greg at their side and a drink in their hand, everything will be okay. Right?
Except, Claire can never have just one drink. And when harassment at school reaches a fever pitch, Claire begins a spiral that ends in court-ordered rehab. Feeling completely lost, Claire is soon surrounded by a group of new friends and, with the help of a patient counselor, finds a space to unpack all the bad they’ve experienced. But as Claire’s release gets closer so does the Can Claire stay sober and true in a world seemingly never made for them?
Set in 1980s Troy, New York, Constellations is a portrait of a queer teen living in the margins but determined to find their way ahead. Done in watercolor and ink, debut author-artist Kate Glasheen has created a world where strong lines meet soft color, and raw emotions meet deep thought in this story of hope, humor, and survival.
