Lost on Gibbon Island by Jess Butterworth

Lost on Gibbon Island by Jess Butterworth is a thrilling adventure story that kept me on the edge of my seat. Lark Taylor, the main character, finds herself shipwrecked on a deserted island in Cambodia with only a baby gibbon as her companion. The book is formatted as Lark’s diary with lined journal pages, beautiful design details and a special map of Gibbon Island by Rob Biddulph.
Lark is a courageous and resourceful protagonist who must use her wit and survival skills to face the many challenges of living on a deserted island. From brutal storms to scorching sunshine and jellyfish-infested waters, Lark is forced to find a way off the island before it’s too late. She must make a plan to find food and water, build shelter and protect herself and her companion from danger.
The author does a fantastic job of painting a vivid picture of the lush island and the challenges that Lark faces. I felt like I was right there with Lark, experiencing everything she went through. The story is well-paced and the suspense kept me turning the pages until the very end.
I especially loved the special map of Gibbon Island included in the book, which added an extra layer of excitement to the story. The journal pages also made me feel like I was reading Lark’s personal diary and added an intimate touch to the story.
Overall, Lost on Gibbon Island is a beautifully written, exciting, and inspiring story of survival that is perfect for middle-grade readers. Jess Butterworth’s storytelling skills are truly impressive, and I look forward to reading more of her books in the future. Highly recommended!
