GOOD by C.P. Taylor directed by Dominic Cooke
Review by Kelly Lacey
I had the pleasure of attending the NT Live Encore Screening of GOOD at the Capital Theatres in Edinburgh, and it was a truly unforgettable experience. David Tennant, best known for his iconic portrayal of Doctor Who, delivered a breathtaking performance as John Halder, a German professor caught up in the tumultuous events of the Second World War.
Under the masterful direction of Olivier Award-winner Dominic Cooke, C.P. Taylor’s powerful and timely play was brought to life with a cast that also included Elliot Levey and Sharon Small. From start to finish, the production was intense, gripping, and emotionally charged, exploring themes of nationalism, power, and morality.

But it was Tennant who stole the show, effortlessly commanding the stage and imbuing Halder with a depth and complexity that left the audience transfixed. He navigated the character’s journey from a well-meaning, intellectual pacifist to a complicit member of the Nazi party with nuance and sensitivity, ultimately delivering a performance that was both chilling and heartbreaking.

The screening, which was filmed live at the Harold Pinter Theatre in London, captured every detail of the production, from the stunning set design to the nuanced performances of the entire cast. I left the theatre feeling moved and inspired by the power of theatre to illuminate complex issues and challenge our assumptions about the world we live in.
In short, if you have the opportunity to see GOOD, whether on stage or in a screening, do not hesitate. It is a must-see production that will leave a lasting impact on all who experience it.

Brilliant review Kelly. David Tennant is such a good actor!
