Not Far From the Peach Tree by Sabrina Falk

Not Far From the Peach Tree was my first novel reading experience with Sabrina Falk. The novel starts in New York City where we find Abigail’s grandmother has passed away. Abigail’s mother is estranged from her grandmother, yet Abigail yearns to learn more about her now deceased grandmother.

She overhears her mother chatting with a lawyer about the grandmother’s estate and decides, even though her mother wants nothing to do with the estate, to meet the lawyer and take a trip down south.

Now Abigail is 22 years old, so her deciding to go down to Georgia and scope out her grandmother’s estate is not so preposterous. What is a little more difficult to swallow is how she makes up a story so that her twelve-year old sister will join her. Once I got over the unlikelihood of this happening, I was able to enjoy the mystery behind the estrangement between Abigail’s mother and grandmother.

And this tale is an interesting one, indeed.

Oh, and did I mention, there’s a love interest for our dear Abigail? It’s a sweet romance that adds to the storyline.

This is a cute story that I might categorize as a beach read. It’s not too serious or heart-wrenching, though it does have moments that tug at the heart strings. And it does touch upon some historical racism. While some of the pieces of the plot feel a little rushed or unbelievable, there’s a satisfying ending.

And now, I leave you with one of my favorite passages. Without too many spoilers, it’s the moment I, as a romance lover, look forward to reading the most:

We laugh and the night sky draws my eyes up between the strands of glowing lights to the moon bending above us like a readied bow, the stars its arrows. I look back at Kames and, in his eyes, I see every flicker of light that surrounds us.

Ah, squee. It’s a lovely moment.
